Food for thought

We are about to finish our topic option "Media and Language", and we have covered quite a few angles to the issue. Nevertheless, I could not help myself in sending you this web article for you to read. Since "in the end" much of what we have discussed in class (if not all) boils down to this. Log on to this website, it will take you directly to an article titled "Determinismo medial e imposibilidad de la comunicacion" Yes, I know it is in Spanish, despite this fact, we will discuss it in English. I would like someone to volunteer to help Anton out with the translation. Thank you.

By the way, I would like you to comment on the image, how do you read it?

  2. It's very messy, but what I undestood from it is that the people who work on the media do not really analize what they publish, and that they should.
In terms of the image, i couldn't figure out what it is.

  4. The idea I was left with after reading the article was the following. Communication nowadays is poorly defined. I believe that the author tried to prove that the fundamental ideas on which communication relies have never been questioned. He may also be trying to express that communication is, and exists through different means.

Regarding the image, I think that the bird, possibly a dove, is carrying an antenna. The dove generally represents peace. But this is not a white dove, but a lined dove, as if seen with interference. Could it be that a disorted peace could be emitted through that antenna to the world? In other words, are we receiving an intended and directioned peace, when, in fact, the world is not peaceful?

  5. I think the image of the bird and the antenna is referring to the importance that media has in peace.
About the article, i really didn't understand it so much but the idea that i was transmitted was that communication si not so defined, and when we think about it we never get to what communication really is

  6. Good overall points Carolina, so are Florencia's in regards to the image. The article needs to be analyzed a bit more though. Florencia, why don't you ask someone at home to read it with you? It does help sometimes.

  7. The article is really confusing, but what i think that is trying to trasmit is that communication is not working the way it should be, stories and problems had been let studied at half way so the information is not well given to the population, but also the people doesn't realize this and also there are plenty of means to get to the information and different thing can be deduce by different people

and as for the image, is represented a bird and an antenna, the bird can represent life and we can suppose it is a white dove (symbol of peace), and the antenna can symbolize communication. We can interpret taht life and peace depend on the communication and that are closely linked, deducting it for its proximity in the picture.

  8. Although the article is messy and confusing due to its difficulty, what i could take from it is that communication exist in many diiferent ways but is not working properly. The cause of media not working well is because topics are not studied in depth and that brings that things get conffused and mixed up. And sometimes is because we change information due to the pressure it has, this pressure could be political, religious or social pressue.
Related to the image i think that the antenna symbolizes communication and the birda representes life. They are strongly connected meaning that we depend from it.If we dedicated just one day to write down all the things that we see, lisen from media in that day as a result we will get a very long list. the bird having lines as representing interference could mean the problems in life sometimes communication has caused due to situations in which things are said without stopping and analysing what we said.

  9. Otelo makes a strong critic to the theory of communication. This theory is called Media Determination and what it says is that means of communication determine totally or partially the social reality.

For example, media justified the Irak wars asuuring that the United States located a threat there that could affect the whole world. Then the ordinary citizen ended believing this farce generated by the means that showed the country as the hero when was really the villain.

Means of communication are there to serve the superpowers by distorting the truth. The vast oil supplies Irak had were what tempted them, but they made us believe the oppposite.Publicists and journalists are the supports of the "convinient reality".

Communication is impossible because of the lack of veracity. We need to capable of having a critical thinking - analyse, filter and decode information in order to discover the hidden motives.

The information that we receive is fragmented beacause of all the alterations the original piece of information has undergone. Denouncing the facts is the media's responsability, but a headache to those who disagree with their vision.

Laswell was right in thinking the world's vision is not unique neither uniform. It varies depending on the culture. For this reason, the messages we receive as receptors doesn't have an universal character.

To conclude i would say that to elaborate a future theory of communication, we would have to put an end to censorship so that the means of communication become truly involved with the community.

The article is closely related to the image. The image shows a dove carrying an antenna. The antenna represents the means of communication and the dove, is a symbol of peace. Peace is being influenced by the means of communication, that is said to be the 4rth power ater the executive, legislative and judicial powers. They are considered to be the fourth power because they make citizens have a certain political tendency. Means of communication do not enjoy from freedom due to the fact they are being manipulated so they lose objectivity and as a consequence distort reality. That's why the dove is defocused, it cannot be seen properly as it should.
